Great Independent Press Books Indie Press Round-Up From Nov. 2019 Im excited about the great independent press books Ive read in the last month. In the list below, youll find six books Ive read and loved, plus six more Im adding to my TBR list. My recommendations include several great conventionally-structured novels and one novel thats basically someones thoughts (a favorite form of mine). Ive included one work of speculative fiction, and one thats partly historical fiction. Youll also find one memoir and one nonfiction work Im not sure how to classify. Two of the books are in translation. There are so many great independent press books out there its hard to choose which ones to pick up. I hope this list helps you find something youll enjoy! Independent Press Books Ive Read and Loved In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado (Graywolf Press, November 5) Carmen Maria Machados follow-up to her wonderful story collection  Her Body and Other Parties  is a memoir about an abusive relationship. While in her MFA, Machado met and fell in love with a charismatic woman who later turned out to be full of rage.  In the Dream House  is a groundbreaking book, in part because of its portrayal of abuse in a queer relationship, a subject not often written about in literary history. Its also a formally inventive book. Machado has divided her memoir into short chapters, each inspired by a narrative trope, many of which come from fairytales and fables. This structure gives the emotionally wrenching story both literary depth and tonal variety. The work Machado does to reveal and fill in gaps in the stories that get told is essential. The Revisioners  by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton (Counterpoint, November 5) Margaret Wilkerson Sextons follow-up to her fabulous first novel  A Kind of Freedom  is a page-turning exploration of southern Black womens stories. The novel spans over 160 years. First, we meet Ava from 2017, struggling to establish independence for herself and her son. Then we meet Josephine, an elderly woman in 1924, who has found some measure of success and security on her farm. The story also jumps back to 1855 to follow Josephine as a young enslaved girl whose family dreams of freedom. Witnessing the way these stories intersect and speak to one another is one of the novels great pleasures. Sextons characters stick in your mind, and she makes you care deeply about their struggles and their triumphs. Its a powerful, sweeping novel of hardship, survival, and hope. The Crying Book  by Heather Christle (Catapult, November 5) Yes, this is a whole book on crying, and its sad and also beautiful. Its written in short sections that look at crying from many angles: personal, biological, historical, artistic, and psychological. The impetus for the book is the death of Heather Christles friend at the same time that she is struggling with depression and preparing to give birth to her first child. She writes about the fruits of her research into crying and describes her own moments of sadness and struggle. Its a gorgeous book. Everything from the cover to the ideas to the sentences is moving and sometimes, in spite of what you might expect given the subject matter, comforting. Readers who like the fragmentary style of Sarah Manguso and Maggie Nelson will want to get a copy. They Will Drown in Their Mothers Tears by Johannes Anyuru, Translated by Saska Vogel (Two Lines Press, November 5) This novel is a work of speculative fiction, looking at terrorism, Islamophobia, and anti-immigrant ideology. Its set in Sweden and opens with a violent attack on a bookstore hosting an author known for controversial drawings of the prophet Mohammed. One of the attackers turns out to be a visitor from an alternate future. Or at least she believes she is. Over the course of the novel she tells her story to a writer who tries to piece together what actually happened. This writer grapples with his status as a Muslim in a place that is less and less welcoming. The novels plot is complex and utterly absorbing, and the alternate future it depicts is a dystopian nightmare. They Will Drown in Their Mothers Tears  is a great story, full of memorable characters. It is also a powerful warning about what is possible when we give free rein to our worst impulses. Big Familia  by Tomas Moniz (Acre Books, November 15) This heartwarming novel tells the story of Juan Gutiérrez as he goes through a time of change. His daughter is about to move to college. His Berkeley neighborhood is gentrifying. Jared, his lover, wants a deeper commitment than he feels ready to make. Even his favorite dive bar is starting to become a popular destination for karaoke lovers. And his relationship with his parents is fraught, not least because they havent acknowledged his queerness. These are serious issues, and the novel gives them their due, but its also light in tone. Its focus is less on plot and more on character development. Watching Juan and his family and friends change and grow is enjoyable. Big Familia looks seriously at race, sexuality, class, and more, while never losing its warmth and charm. Seven Samurai Swept Away in a River  by Jung Young Moon, Translated by Yewon Jung (Deep Vellum, December 3) This short novel rambles and jumps from thought to thought, following the narrators mind wherever it wants to go. The premise is that the narratorâ€"who is sort of Jung Young Moon but sort of not, since this is a novelâ€"has traveled to Texas from his native Korea. He stays with friends and rambles around small towns and farms thinking about everything Texas signifies. His meditations range far and wide and include extended riffs on presidential assassinations, cowboy hats, churches, and much more. The narrator also considers what a novel is, what plot is, and what the point of writing is. He considers what the point of anything is. The book is a delightful adventure into the corners of one companionable, entertaining persons mind. More Independent Press Books For Your TBR And finally, here are some great independent press books out soon that Im adding to my TBR pile. The Living Days by Ananda Devi, translated by Jeffrey Zuckerman (The Feminist Press, November 5): a novel about post-9/11 London, xenophobia, nationalism. It tells the story of a relationship between a 75-year-old white woman and a 13-year-old Jamaican boy. Silence of the Chagos  by Shenaz Patel, translated by Jeffrey Zuckerman (Restless Press, November 5): a novel about activists from Diego Garcia, one of the islands of the Chagos archipelago in the Indian Ocean. They were forced to leave their homes and their island and told they could not return. Parade: A Folk Tale  by Hiromi Kawakami, translated by Allison Markin Powell (Soft Skull Press, November 5): a short novel set in a summer afternoon about a pair of tengu, creatures from Japanese folk tales. Some of Us Are Very Hungry Now  by Andre Perry (Two Dollar Radio, November 12): a collection of personal essays in a variety of formats about race, sexuality, culture, and more. Dead Heat  by Benedek Totth, translated by Ildikó Noémi Nagy (Biblioasis, November 19): a coming-of-age novel about misbehaving teenagers on a swim team in a Hungarian town. Fish Soup  by Margarita García Robayo, translated by Charlotte Coombe (Charco Press, December 3): a collection of slice-of-life stories and novellas set in Colombia about emotional turmoil and change. Faith Suspended - Literature Essay Samples

Emily Dickinson is perhaps one of the most intriguing American poets studied. The remote look in her eyes mirror her life, which she mostly spent secluded in her home in Amherst, Massachusetts. While leading an outwardly reclusive life, she unleashes the faculties of her mind in her powerful poetry. She addresses compelling themes such as death, depression, human despair, individual capability, and the art of poetry. Her feelings on these subjects emerge in her poems, but her exact thoughts are difficult to uncover since her poetry is so highly enigmatic. Likewise, the subject matter of Christianity in her poetry remains one the most inconsistent of Dickinsons reoccurring themes. It is known that she stopped attending church at an early age and eventually withdrew from Mount Holyoke Female Seminary because she could not accept the idea of Original Sin (Conarroe 74). Furthermore, Dickinson also resisted the local religious revivals in which other family members and friends . . . became involved (884). Despite her dislike for revivals, as did many clergymen during her time, Dickinson incorporates central Christian themes in her poetry. She often makes Biblical references such as Because Your Face / Would put out Jesus- (22-23), and The Brain is just the weight of God- (5). It is also noted that She loved the Bible, among a list of other great writers and their works, and said, Why is any other book needed?' (Conarroe 73). In addition, her form and meter imitate the hymnal ballads that she had heard throughout her life. Consequently, it may be difficult to conclude how she feels about Christianity, for there is evidence both ways. Because Dickinsons stance is not plainly obvious, she compels the reader to excavate her poetry for further evidence. In her poem Faith is a fine invention, Dickinson puts quotes around the word Faith,' bringing to attention the irony between the words original meaning, which is the belief in God, and its more contempora ry meaning, the religion of Christianity. There is a sense of loss in the speakers voice on faith and what it has become. The first line reads, Faith is a fine invention (1). Instead of faith referring to the unadulterated belief in God, Dickinson suggests that it has become merely an invention (1), something that is man made and no longer sacred. The first two lines, Faith is a fine invention / When Gentlemen can see- (1-2) also imply that the men, or mankind, cannot see, which makes man-made religion not such a fine invention. The next line begins with, But Microscopes are prudent (3). Dickinson is saying that many times, people looking towards faith are missing the grand scheme of Christianity by trying to look at it through a microscope. Perhaps Dickinson is criticizing how people have become so overly focused on the doctrines of Christianity, rather than simply having faith in God. Dickinson herself, disagrees with the church on the issue of Original Sin, yet she cont inues to seek spiritual solace away from the family pew, as she says, Some keep the Sabbath going to Church / I keep it, staying at Home- (Conarroe 74). In the final lines of the poem, she says that microscopes are prudent / In an Emergency (4), pleading Christians to stop wasting their brief lives on earth looking down through microscopes and start looking up to God. In this poem, Dickinson appears to criticize what man has made of Faith, not the belief of God in itself.Another one of Dickinsons poems, I cannot live with You- , seems to be a love poem, perhaps addressing Rev. Charles Wadsworth, with whom she appears to have had a close personal relationship with (884). The poem is full of tender words that yearn for her deceased lover, but, like so many of her poems, it is consistent with more than just one interpretation. This poem can also be seen as Dickinsons love poem to Christ. In addition to the imagery of her lovers face being able to put out, or smother even Christs brilliant face, Dickinson might be using the phrase also in the more literal sense, of her lover revealing or putting forth the face of Christ. In this reading of the poem, she speaks to Christ as if He were her lover, as she expresses anguish and grief for not being able to be together with Him. In the beginning stanza, Dickinson says, I cannot live with YouIt would be Life-And Life is over there-Behind the Shelf (1-4)Dickinson equates Christ to life, just as Christ did in John 14:6, I am the way and the truth and the life. Moreover, she suggests that Christ is hidden behind the shelf, with the shelf possibly representing religion. It is interesting that she uses the image of the shelf to separate Christ from her because shelves oftentimes hold books, which are symbols of human knowledge and understanding. Dickinson may be inferring that human reason and interpretation of the Bible have in fact, stood in the way of God and mankind.In the second stanza, Dickinson writes that t he Sexton keeps the Key to / Putting up / Our Life- His Porcelain- (5-8). Here, she likens mankind to Christs porcelain, something fragile and beautiful, a precious belonging of Christs. She also points out that the sexton, who according to the Oxford English Dictionary is a church officer who carries out the menial duties of the church, has the key to Putting up / Our Life- (7-8). Dickinson uses the image of the sexton as a symbol of the technical, or dogmatic elements of religion, thus, implying that mans belief in God have been disrupted by the very doctrines of Christianity. Dickinson makes an allusion to Christs crucifixion in the fourth stanza, I could not die- with You- (13), and His resurrection in the sixth stanza, Nor could I rise- with You- / Because Your Face / Would put out Jesus (21-23). Again, when taking the phrase in the literal sense of putting forth or revealing ones face, she is telling Christ that she regrets not being able to die or resurrect with Him . She longs to be with Christ and no longer want to fuss over religious doctrines such as the idea of Original Sin. There is a definite tone of guilt in these lines, the guilt of not being able to whole-heartedly believe the Christian doctrine in its entirety. She says to Christ,Theyd judge Us- How- For You- served Heaven- You know,Or sought to- I could not (29-32)It is true that Rev. Charles Wadsworth served God, but in a sense, Christ too served God as He descended to earth as a heavenly sacrifice. In the eleventh stanza, Dickinson continues to seek her lover, Christ. She describes His absence as being hell. And I- condemned to be / Where You were not / That self- were Hell to Me- (41-44).Finally, Dickinson realizes that she and Christ can never come together on earth because of the discrepancies between herself and the teachings of the Christian religion. So We must meet apart / You there- I- here- (45-46). She resolves that the only way is for her to keep the door, or the communication between them, open as wide as the oceans are with prayer. With just the Door ajar / That Oceans are- and Prayer- (47-48). She also includes that her despair, caused by the confusion of the Christian doctrine, keeps her leaning towards God, that White Sustenance (49), for spiritual solace.The Christian readings of these poems offer an interesting glimpse into Dickinsons views on Christ and religion. Her passionate monologue addressing her lover in the last poem reveals the clear distinction she makes between her faith in God and her belief in the Christian doctrine. Throughout the poem she longs for Christ, and finally accepts the fact that Christian truths may never be discovered while on earth. Perhaps her feelings of uncertainty are manifested in her frequent use of the dash, which effectively suspends the reader just as she is suspended from the truth. Works CitedConarroe, Joel. Robert Hooke and the Coil Spring

Robert Hooke was perhaps the single greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century, responsible for developing a concept hundreds of years ago that would result in coil springs that are still used widely today. About Robert Hooke   Hooke actually considered himself a philosopher, not an inventor. Born in 1635 on England’s Isle of Wight, he studied classics in school, then went on to Oxford University where he worked as an assistant to Thomas Willis, a physician. Hooke became a member of the Royal Society and is credited with discovering cells.   Hooke was peering through a microscope one day in 1665 when he noticed pores or cells  in a piece of cork tree. He decided these were containers for the â€Å"noble juices† of the substance he was inspecting. He assumed at the time that these cells were unique to plants, not to all living matter, but he is nonetheless given credit for discovering them. The Coil Spring Hooke conceived of what would become known as â€Å"Hooke’s Law 13 years later in 1678. This premise explains the elasticity of solid bodies, a discovery which led to the development of tension increasing and decreasing in a spring coil. He observed that when an elastic body is subjected to stress, its dimension or shape changes in proportion to the applied stress over a range. On the basis of his experiments with springs, stretching wires and coils, Hooke stated a rule between extension and force which would become known as Hooke’s Law: Strain and the relative change in dimension is proportional to stress. If the stress applied to a body goes beyond a certain value known as the elastic limit, the body does not return to its original state once the stress is removed. Hookes law applies only in the region below the elastic limit. Algebraically, this rule has the following form: F kx. Hookes Law would eventually become the science behind coil springs.  He died in 1703, never having married or had children. Hooke’s Law Today Automobile suspension systems, playground toys, furniture, and even retractable ballpoint pens employ springs these days. Most have an easily predicted behavior when force is applied. But someone had to take Hooke’s philosophy and put it to use before all these useful tools could be developed. R. Tradwell received the first patent for a coil spring in 1763 in Great Britain. Leaf springs were all the rage at the time, but they required significant maintenance, including regular oiling. The coil spring was much more efficient and  less squeaky.   It would be almost another hundred years before the first coil spring made of steel found its way into furniture: It was used in an armchair in 1857.

Understanding Irregular -ER French Verbs

There are a lot of French verbs that end in -ER and there are a lot of irregular French verbs, but there is only one irregular -ER verb. However, there are three groups of -ER verbs that have some irregularities. One True Irregular -ER Verb Aller (to go) is the only truly irregular -er verb in French - its conjugations are unique and, according to some, very odd. Spelling Change Verbs Spelling change verbs  are verbs that end in -cer or -ger. Their stem formation and verb endings are the same as for regular -er verbs, but there is a slight spelling change for pronunciation purposes in certain conjugations. Stem-Changing Verbs Stem-changing verbs  are -er verbs that take the regular endings but have two different radicals. There are five categories of French stem-changing verbs: -yer, -eler, -eter, -e_er, and -à ©_er. -IER Verbs There is nothing actually irregular about the conjugation of -ier verbs - they are conjugated like regular -er verbs, but some of their forms look strange.

When Ronald Reagan to the oath of office on January 20, 1981, he called upon Americans to â€Å"begin an era of national renewal.† In response to the serious problems facing the country, both foreign and domestic, he asserted his familiar campaign phrase: Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem. His dream was to make America the beacon of hope and freedom for those who do not have freedom. Reagan advanced domestic policies that featured a lessening of federal government responsibility in solving social problems, reducing restrictions on business, and implementing tax cuts. Internationally, Reagan demonstrated a fierce opposition to the spread of communism throughout the world and a strong distrust of the Soviet Union, which in 1983 he labeled an evil empire. The heart of Reagan s foreign policy was to prevent the expansion of communism and at the heart of communism was the Soviet Union. Reagan often referred to the Soviet Union as the â€Å"e vil empire.† Reagan believed that the United States should negotiate with the Soviet Union from a position of strength. At the time, I don’t think we realized that we would be together soon; camp would only be a year away and the winter retreat a mere six months. But who thinks of that at the time? Who reflects on such details when so overcome with emotion? That’s what pictures are for: to look back and rethink situations, to clear your head and to revisit and understand past circumstances. Now looking back I understand and am at peace – I will see them soon. This realization excites me; the thought of seeing their faces enthuses me like the thought of a warm summer day. Once again we will have the chance to talk about and worship Jesus and not hold anything back. It is seldom that I get the chance to have companionship with other Christians and to be in an environment where everyone’s focus is on God. Times like these I savor; slowly nibbling a piece of chocolate – sweet and smooth -letting it melt on my tongue. But like any piece of chocolate, there is an end to it. Goodbye waves and driveways are in inevitable. However, when we go home, our relationship with our God stays the same; we are still followers of Jesus – only now swimming up stream. Yet we do this together; we may not be side by side but we all love our God simultaneously. I can still remember the warm kiss of the sun dancing on my arm; the sensation of relaxation and comfort came down from the sky and hugged me, masking the inner sadness I had welling up inside. Yet, looking back at this picture, I can now remember also a great sense of confidence, knowing I was and am not alone in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ; those on the ground I was waving goodbye to and those whom I was sitting with on the bus all have the same purpose. This picture is a monument – lasting evidence, a reminder and an example of a great and notable event in my life: camp. It was a place where I became closer to God and made many marvelous friends. I will miss my brethren but despite the reality of our separation, there is comfort. There is comfort in knowing I will see them soon and until then we share the same purpose in unity. We don’t have to be physically together in order to be brothers and sisters in Christ. We are connected by a common denominator: God. He is more than a NewEngland poet: he is morethan an American poet; heis a poet who can beunderstood anywhere byreaders versed in mattersmore ancient and universalthan the customs of onecountry, whatever thatcountry is. Frosts countryis the country of humansense: of experience, ofimagination, and ofthought. His poems start athome, as all good poemsdo; as Homers did, asShakespeares, asGoethes, and asBaudelaires; but they endup everywhere, as only thebest poems do. This ispartly because his wisdomis native to him, and could not have been suppressed by any circumstance; it ispartly, too, because his education has been right. He is our least provincial poetbecause he is the best grounded in those ideasGreek, Hebrew, modernEuropeans and even Orientalwhich make for well-built art at any time. He doesnot parade his learning, and may in fact not know that he has it: but there in hispoems it is, and it is what makes them so solid, so humorous, and so satisfying. His many poems have been different from one another and yet alike. They are thework of a man who has never stopped exploring himselfor, if you like, America,or better yet, the world. He has been able to believe, as any good artist must, thatthe things he knows best because they are his own will turn out to be true for otherpeople. He trusts his own feelings, his own doubts, his own certainties, his ownexcitements. And there is absolutely no end to these, given the skill he needs tostate them and the strength never to be wearied by his subject matter. It is there because it has to be, in the service of somethinginfinitely more important: a report of the world by one who lives in it without anycause to believe that he is different from other persons except for the leisure he hasgiven himself to walk about and think as well as possible concerning all the thingshe sees; and to take accurate note of the way they strike him as he looks. What theyare in themselves is not to be known; or who he is, either, if all his thought is ofhimself; but when the two come together in a poem, testimony may result. This iswhat Frost means by subject matter, and what any poet had better mean if heexpects to be read. Frost is more and more read, by old readers and by young, because in this crucialand natural sense he has so much to say. He is a generous poet. His book confidesmany discoveries, and shares with its readers a world as wild as it is wideadangerous world, hard to live in, yet the familiar world that is the only one weshall ever have, and that we can somehow love for the bad things in it as well asthe good, the unintelligible as well as the intelligible. Frost is a laconic New Englander: that is to say, he talks more than anybody. Hetalks all the time. The inhabitants of New England accuse one another of talkingtoo much, but all are guilty together, all are human; for man is a talking animal,and never more so than when he is trying to prove that silence is best. Frost hasexpressed the virtue of silence in hundreds of poems, each one of them moreingenious than the last in the way it takes of suggesting that it should not have beenwritten at all. They burn in theirplaces as he burns in his, and it is just as well that neither fire can consume theother; yet each of them is a fire, and secretly longs to mingle with its far neighbor. The great thing about man for Frost is that he has the power of standing still wherehe is. He is on the earth, and it is only one of many places, and perhaps everyother place is better. But this is his place, where in spite of his longing to leave ithe can stay till his time comes. Like any other distinguished person, Frost lives intwo worlds at once: this one, and another one which only makes it more attractive. The superiority of the other one is what proves the goodness of the one we have,which doggedly we keep on loving, as doggedly it tolerates and educates us if welet it do so. Wisdom is enduring it exactly as it is; courage is being familiar with itand afraid of it in the right proportions; temperance is the skill to let it be; andjustice is the knowledge that between it and you there will always be a loversquarrel, never to die into cold silence and never to be made up. Fine if you are a reader. Not cool if you are an author. Why? Because whatever you write online, inckuding a book review, reflects on your writing abilities. Lets talk about what you DO when you offer to write a book review. 1) You post on Amazon or Goodreads. Frankly, unless you write for some mighty big organizations like Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, or Foreword, or have a social media or blog with followers in the thousands, the most important reviews you can write are on Amazon and Goodreads. A lot of decisions are made 2) You review promptly. Dont request a review copy unless you are ready to be part of the team to get the news out timely. That usually means within two to four weeks of receipt. 3) You follow-through and do the review. Someone paid for those books and that postage in hopes you are going to follow through with your promise. Often $8 to $15. Put that book on the top of your to-be-read stack. Dont think, They wont miss it. Not true. Every review matters. 4) Write a meaty review. What did you love about it and what rubbed you wrong. Show that you actually read the book. A simple I liked it will not convince anyone to purchase or not purchase the book. The reason you were chosen to review the book was to post an honest analysis. 5) Avoid writing spoilers. Would you buy a book after reading  a review that gives away the twists and plot? When I bring up the topic of reviews in chats, on Facebook, or at conferences, writers grumble. They grumble BIG time. Therefore, as a writer, you have a responsibility to review professionally. You know what it feels like. When books are sent out for review, theres an unspoken time constraint. They are attempting to boost notice of the release, boost sales, and measure the success of the book. If you are given a gratuitous book, jump on the review. Only if you buy the book on your own do you buy the right to take your time. But regardless, write the review intelligently . . . write it well. Make people WANT you to review their next book.
